This painting was made following a summer of working at The National Wildflower centre. It was informed by a visit to the wildflower fields the centre created, alongside memories of childhood and my Auntie who loved flowers. I feel it became a celebration of her plus a more joyful approach to mark-making for me. The painting method was informed by digital manipulation of photos as well as drawing.
The work was first exhibited in St John’s market, Liverpool Biennial Independents 2002.
This was a project at the early stages of my career as a painter. It was a very exciting opportunity for me. I was chosen by Roger Stephenson, architect (formerly Stephenson Bell, Manchester) to produce one large scale, and three small scale works for their new build of a restaurant bar – the Sterling Prize shortlisted Quay Bar in Deansgate.
